DIY Tree Planting Part 3: Proper planting is critical.

These are just a few key items to ensure a tree's success:

1. Dig a hole wider than the tree's root ball or container but not deeper.
2. Remove burlap and wire basket (if possible). Untangle or trim any circling or damaged roots.
3. Do not bury the trunk flare. Lightly repack soil and water as you backfill with more soil to eliminate air pockets.
4. Mulch the tree but do not place mulch against the trunk.
