DIY Tree Planting Part 3: Proper planting is critical.
These are just a few key items to ensure a tree's success:
- Dig a hole wider than the tree's root ball or container but not deeper.
- Remove burlap and wire basket (if possible). Untangle or trim any circling or damaged roots.
- Do not bury the trunk flare. Lightly repack soil and water as you backfill with more soil to eliminate air pockets.
- Mulch the tree but do not place mulch against the trunk.
